The project significantly remodels and extends the existing facility to create ten science labs, three prep rooms, improved staff and reprographic facilities, a glazed entrance lobby and a biomass boiler. The current department comprises 3 curtilage Listed buildings of varying ages. Our scheme rationalises the circulation spaces between these to create a central glazed atrium. To the rear, we have proposed an extension incorporating a zinc-clad pitched roof, which reflects the scale and proportions of the existing chemistry building. The school’s historic campus sits a stones’ throw from York Minster, just outside the city walls. As the scheme involves Listed buildings, design development was complex and the Planning Application followed in-depth negotiations between squiresandbrown, the Planners and the Conservation Officer. The project is due to start on site in 2018.
