Innovation Centre, Aberdour School

squiresandbrown won the architectural competition to design this modern teaching facility in 2012. Despite the site being designated as Green Belt, full planning permission was granted in 2013 following a careful and thorough consultation process. The Innovations Centre has two floors of excitingly different facilities which stimulate the children’s abilities in creative thinking and self-expression. The ground floor includes a STEM Innovations Studio using robotics, coding, programming, animation and 3D printing and an Interactive Languages Studio delivering a programme of Languages, Linguistics and Culture. The studio replicates life abroad in a rotating selection of practical environments (including Green Screen technology) where children are encouraged to develop practical language skills and creative ideas for living and working in foreign communities. On the first floor Music rooms provide the latest technology and a curriculum that allows pupils to appreciate excellence in both conventional and ultra-modern genres, before moving on to create their own sounds. A Dance, Yoga & Drama Studio (incorporating a Green Screen technology wall) allows for physical expression, again encouraging creativity and experimentation. The building was shortlisted in the 2016 Times’ Independent School Awards in the ‘Strategic Education Innovation’ category.
